Thomas Cockrell was born and raised in South Carolina. In 1789, he married Elizabeth Huey, daughter of James Huey, Jr. and Sarah Ferguson Mason of Chester County, South Carolina. Their first child and only daughter was born in Chester County. They had moved across the county line into Fairfield County by 1799 where their other three children were born, the youngest in 1811. They were caught up in the excitement of a great migration west and the promise of settling virgin land. Extended families and neighbors joined together and were on the move with their covered wagons, on horseback or on foot. In 1812, Thomas, Elizabeth and sons joined her Huey family in a move across the Mississippi River to Ouachita Parish, Louisiana. Their married daughter and spouse joined his Collie family crossing the Tennessee River into eastern Tennessee. Thomas and Elizabeth settled on land in the Western Monroe District. Their sons married and grandchildren arrived Their daughter and son-in-law joined them in Louisiana sometime after 1840. Thomas died in Louisiana over thirty years later. His widow made a settlement of his estate with their adult children. A record of this settlement is on file in the Ouachita Parish Courthouse.
