Artist. Born in Brompton, England, he was noted as one of the most prolific portrait painters of his generation. During the coarse of his lifetime, he produced over 2,500 portraits of which over 200 are in the National Portrait Gallery in London and in art museums worldwide. His subjects included Charles Darwin, King Edward VII, William Wilberforce, Elizabeth Fry and Charlotte Bronte. Most are still held in private collections, or owned by the same families that commissioned them in the 19th Century. He died at age 86 in his home at Portman Square, England, where he had lived and worked for fifty-four years.
