Lola May Burkey, 92, died Monday, March 4, 2013, at Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehab in Vinton.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 8, 2013, at the Garrison Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton.

Lola was born April 25, 1920, on a farm in rural Garrison, the daughter of Merton and Amanda Wood Allen. She attended country school near Garrison. Lola was a lifelong resident of Benton County.

In 1938, Lola was united in marriage with Melvin Burkey, and the couple farmed in the Garrison/Vinton area until Melvin's death at the age of 53 in 1971. She worked as a nurses' aide at Sunnycrest Nursing Home in Dysart and also as a cook at several restaurants.

Lola is survived by one daughter, Beverly (Dennis W.) H. of Indianapolis, Ind.; daughter-in-law Judy B. of Vinton; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Rachel N. of Oregon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Dwayne Burkey; one brother, Frank Allen; and one sister, Addie Newton.
