Samuel G. Wandell Well-Known Lawyer Dies In Utica

Samuel G. Wandell, frequent visitor of Mexico, who married the late Flora Hartson, native of this village, and well known attorney who practiced in Syracuse, Oswego and New York, died Saturday in the Masonic home in Utica after a long illness.

He has been assistant corporation counsel of New York City from 1929 until last June when he retired because of poor health. He was 83 years old.

Mr. Wandell was admitted to the New York State Bar on Oct. 6, 1882, and became assistant District Attorney of Oswego in the same year, practicing in Oswego. In 1883 he went to Washington, D.C., to serve as counsel for several corporations. The next year he practiced law in Syracuse and in 1895 moved to New York.

Mr. Wandell devoted many years of research and study to the life of Aaron Burr, and he wrote a biography of Burr in collaboration with Meade Minnigerode in 1925. In the same year, he became counsel for the New York Department of Finance.

He was the author of "The Law of Inns, Hotels and Boarding Houses," "The Law Relating to Disposition of Descendants' Real Estate," "The Law of the Theatre," "Analytical Chart of the Law of Costs," "You Should Not" "The Law Relating to Public Contract Liens."

He collaborated with the late Justice David McAdam on the new edition of "McAdam on Law Of Landlord and Tenant." He also wrote many legal and historical monographs.

Mr. Wandell was a Scribe of Tammany Society, a Mason, and a member of the Presbyterian club, the Holland Society and the Office Guild.

Burial was made in Mexico cemetery in the Hartson plot Monday afternoon.
