Efforts to save a small girl from drowning Sunday afternoon resulted in the tragic death of Mrs. J. O. Burris, 30, and her son, James Otis Burris, 10, as both of them were drowned near their home in the Swearingen community.

Mrs. Burris and the children were bathing in a hole of water near Swearingen on Salt Fork River when one of the smaller girls suddenly stepped into a deep hole and disappeared with a scream for help. James Otis, realizing the plight of his eight-year-old sister, went to her assistance, but despite the fact that he was reputed to be a good swimmer the child pulled him under, and Mrs. Burris went to the aid of the children. Through the combined effort of the boy and his mother, the younger child was pushed to the bank and hauled to safety by another of the small children, but Mrs. Burris and her son were drowned.

The Burris family has lived in this county for the past eleven and one-half months and at the time of the accident were working on the Horton farm.

Funeral services for Mrs. Burris and her son were held Tuesday afternoon from the Nazarene church.

Mrs. Burris was born September 5, 1903 in Pope County, Arkansas and James Otis was born December 25, 1922, in Garvin County, Oklahoma.

Mrs. Burris is survived by her husband, J. O. Burris and four children, Hazel, age 9; Cora, age 8; Ima Gene, age 6; Jewell, age 3, all of Swearingen. Also her father, H. C. Coffman of Kennedy, Texas; two brothers, Elija and Clifton Coffman, both of Kennedy.
