He was a Methodist minister - established first Methodist in Asheville. As a young man he traveled hundreds of miles on horseback, carrying the gospel to the small settlements. He interrupted his full-time preaching duties in the Autumn of 1849 to settle down due to Eliza's declining health. He began working for his father-in-law, Col. Alexander, and made a financial success in many business endeavors. After some 23 years of business activities, he returned to the church on a full-time basis, filling the pulpits of various large churches.
