Ruth Lunceford Park
Mar. 25, 1999
Ruth Lunceford Park, a telephone operator for 34 years and a lifelong resident of Sebastopol, died Saturday at her daughter's house in Sebastopol. She was 91.
A graduate of Analy High School, Park went to work for Pacific Bell in 1927.
In an interview with The Press Democrat in 1991, she described the early days of the small-town phone business: "If the house was on fire, they'd call us and the operator would press the button to start the siren that called the (volunteer) firemen,'' she said. "In those days there was a lot more closeness. People depended on you for things ... We were the 911 of our day.''
Parks was a longtime member of the Pioneer Club and enjoyed gardening around her home.
"Everybody respected her,'' said her daughter, Bonnie Nott of Sebastopol. "She was a real class act.''
In addition to her daughter, Park is survived by three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. today at Sebastopol Memorial Lawn, 7951 Bodega Ave., Sebastopol.
