Marine Painter. He came from an entire family of painters that included fourteen brothers and sister in total. He studied under his father, William, a portrait and landscape painter. He also attended the York School of Design and the Royal Academy Schools. He married Mary Bollans. His early work in landscapes and rural scenes reflected the teachings of Ruskin and the influence of Pre-Raphaelites. He turned to marine painting in 1857 and that is where he made his name. His work was often compared to J C Hook, but his technique was more like William McTaggart. His fluid brush strokes and bold coloring captured the movement of the waves and the mood of the open seas. In 1885 he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy. For many years he had been a member of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Color. His painting "Clearness After Rain" gained him the Grand Prix de Paris in 1889 and the decoration of the Legion of Honor. He first exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1853 and never missed an annual exhibition after that.
