Thomas was born and raised in Wales and worked in the coal mines when he was old enough. There he met and married his first wife, Sarah Painter, on 26 September 1842. Together, they are the parents of the following:
1) Richard Jarman b. 1845
2) John Jarman b. 1847
3) Margaret Jarman b. 1850

Sarah died in June of 1852, in Bedwelty, Monmouthshire, Wales. Thomas met and married his second wife, Anne Phillips, on 24 September 1855. She was about nine years his senior and was a widow, but the marriage worked for both of them. They both had a desire to come to Utah and that was one of their goals when they married.

Thomas and his family emigrated from Wales, on the ship "Samuel Curling" along with 702 other people, leaving from Liverpool, England on 19 April 1856. They arrived at Boston, Massachusetts on 23 May 1856. They were pioneers in the Edward Bunker handcart company and arrived in Salt Lake City on 2 October 1856. They settled in Provo, Utah Territory.

Thomas met and married Anna Margaretha Buchi, who had immigrated from Switzerland. They made their home in Provo and are parents of the following:
1) Caroline Ann Jarman b. 8 Dec 1867
2) Sarah A Jarman b. 26 Nov 1868
3) Thomas Lewis Jarman b. 23 Jan 1870
4) Hyrum John Jarman b. 1 Oct 1871
5) Barbara Jarman b. 22 Sep 1874
6) Evan Thomas Jarman b. 13 Oct 1875
7) Heber Woolerick Jarman b. 23 Sep 1877
8) Margaret Ann Jarman b. 22 Aug 1880
9) James Rynard Jarman b. 22 Jan 1883

Please note that while his headstone says he was born in 1810, he was probably born in 1811. This is the date he gave when immigrating as well as in church ordinances.
