Martha Louise Thomson was born Sept. 1, 1917 in Topeka, Kansas. She moved to California and attended Chula Vista High School. She then attended San Diego State College for two years. She met and married Ian Thomson in 1937. They lived most of their married lives in San Diego. She moved to Alaska in 1995 to be near family.

During her marriage, Mrs. Thomson spent about 40 hours per week on volunteer work. She became president of the League of Women Voters in San Diego. The League sponsored of group of YWCA girls, and she served many years on the local board of directors. She also served on the Mental Health Board of San Diego as the area appointee and worked for the Rehabilitation League for women and girls in pretrial detention. She was appointed to the board of the league and eventually became its president. She was active in her church's women's groups, moving up from the local level to the national level. She was on the board of trustees for her church and for many years gave seminars on leadership skills.

In 1998, she received the Clara Barton award from San Diego District for community service. She studied Japanese flower arranging and was a certified instructor. An avid reader, she was interested in causes supporting women and children. She was a long time resident of Providence Horizon House.

She was preceded in death by her husband on 63 years, Ian Thomson and son, Carroll Thomson.
