Calvin Coolidge Hawkins, 91, of Mt. Vernon, Arkansas, passed away Thursday, January 8, 2015. He was born September 21, 1923, in Mt. Vernon the eldest son of Abraham Lincoln and Vera Davis Hawkins of Mt. Vernon.

On April 18, 1944 he married his sweetheart, Hazel Nolen Hawkins. They were married 56 years prior to her passing away in 2000. He was also preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Vera Adna; a son, Danny Edward; a daughter, Glenda Louise Sanders; a brother, Alvin Clinton Hawkins; a brother-in-law, Jerry Lynn Rose.

Calvin was a Baptist and attended the Mt. Nebo Baptist Church. He was a member of the Cadron Creek Masonic Lodge #736 for over 50 years. He worked many years, coast to coast and in Alaska, constructing pipelines. The majority of the time he worked for H.C. Prince Construction Company. He was a member of the Operating Engineer’s’ Union. Calvin helped build the missile silos in Arkansas, operating an excavator. He worked on the Toad Suck Lock and Dam.

In his later years, he owned a backhoe and could be counted on to help his neighbors if they needed a septic tank installed or grave dug regardless of their ability to pay. He lived all his life on the same farm that has been in his family since 1857. He enjoyed the farm and his cattle.


He is survived by his daughter, Martha Ann Garrison and husband Larry of Mt. Vernon, Mary Jane Roberts and husband Charles of Bryant; son-in-law, Ralph Sanders of Conway; sisters, Bronnie Marie Rose and Bonnie Caldwell and husband Gary of Conway; grandchildren, Lisa Renee Sanders Hankins (Steve), Tracey Ann Garrison, Justin Edward Garrison (Andrea), Kristen Danielle Roberts Sowell (John); great-grandchildren, Ashley Hankins, Eden and Riley Sowell, and many other loving family members and friends.

Funeral Service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with Brother H.R. Neal officiating.

Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Serving as

Pallbearers will be John Sowell, Steve Hankins, Steve Hawkins, Jimmy Lewis Hawkins, Chris Hawkins, Jimmy Bartley, Daymon Brewer and Ricky Harrison. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be Weldon Davis, Gary Caldwell, Douglas Hawkins, Henry Caldwell, Gary Volok, John Ed Armstrong, Gary Hawkins, Eddie Hawkins, Max Gambell, Harvey Searcy, Eugene Flippen, Bill Noggles, Todd Protho, Byron Hawkins and Kelton Keathley.

Visitation will be from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home in Conway.
