Lee Mitchell Newman, age 58, of Mount Vernon, Washington passed away March 1, 2013 with Lisa, his wife, holding his hand after a yearlong brave journey with esophageal cancer.

He was born on May 12, 1954 in Seattle, Washington, first born son of Dale and Florence Newman.

Lee spent the first nine years of his life in Eastern Washington in the Naches and Twisp areas before the family moved to Fir Island.

He attended school in Conway where he still holds the record at the Conway Grade School for the softball throw at 257 feet in 1969.

Lee learned strong work ethic growing up and working on the game range with his Dad and on Wylie's Farm.

After high school, Lee became an Ironworker and continued in the trade until moving into heavy construction as a Teamster and Heavy Equipment Operator. He had extraordinary insight and talents and was a master at problem solving and fixing anything.

Lee and Lisa were married on February 27, 1988 in LaConner. In 1990, they started Newman Trucking and Excavation which he successfully operated until his illness forced him to retired. In 2008, he and Lisa became business partners with Debbie and Gino Monetti operating Mount Vernon Carpet One.

Lee enjoyed road trips with Lisa, riding his Harley, fishing, crabbing, and oyster barbeques with friends and family. He loved being outdoors doing anything, be it working or playing and just enjoying nature at its best. He will always be remembered for his white fish net shirts, his ever present tape measure and gloves, and his deep compassion for animals and their unconditional love. Lee was a man of character and lived his life with integrity and honor. He touched many lives and was incredibly humbled by the outpouring of love and support from family, friends, co-workers and acquaintances.

Lee is survived by his wife Lisa of 25 years. Also surviving are mother Florence Newman-Koetje (Paul), brother Phil Newman (Julie), brother Terry Newman and his children Kara and Alexis and granddaughter Veronica, parents-in-law Howard and Shirley Harjes, sister-in-law Denise Stoupa (Mike) and their children Shane and Lauren, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and a large circle of friends.

He was preceded in death by his Dad (Dale Newman), his grandparents, numerous aunts and uncles, and his beloved dog Casey and cat Latte.

Lee will be dearly missed, but his spirit will live on in our hearts forever. With his passing, we are given solace knowing that he will always be at our side guiding and protecting us with his wisdom and insight.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Hospice of the Northwest especially Natalie and Doug, Dr. Rico Romano, Dr. Bruce Skinner, the staff of Skagit Regional Cancer Care, and all the family and friends for their love and support.

In keeping with Lee's wishes, there will be a casual open house style celebration of his life for family and friends at The Farmhouse Restaurant on Saturday, March 23rd from 2:00 5:00 pm. Please join us to wish Lee a fond farewell.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Humane Society of Skagit County (18841 Kelleher Road, Burlington, WA 98233), Hospice of the Northwest (819 13th Street, Mount Vernon, WA 98274) or a charity of your choice .
