  Helen Mennemeyer Herren, age 89, of Wood River, died at 4:57 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Eden Village Retirement Center in Glen Carbon.
  She was born on Nov. 7, 1914, in Portage DeSouix, Mo., the daughter of the late Anton and Anna Schmidt Mennemeyer.
  She married Charles Herren on May 18, 1946, in Oceola, Ark.  He preceded her in death on Sept. 3, 1958.
  She was survived by two daughters (living) Sloan and (living) Kosek, two grandchildren, a brother and two sisters (living) Scotland and (living) Mormino.
  She was employed by the Brown Shoe Company in Hartford until 1967, when she became employed by SIUE and was the first female custodial supervisor, retiring at the age of 72. Her memberships included St. Bernard Catholic Church and had attended St. Bernard School where she was awarded the school's first American Legion Scholastic Award. She attended church at Our Lady Queen of Peace while residing at Villa Rose Retirement Community. Other memberships included the Ladies Auxiliary of V.F.W. Post 2859 or Wood river and Women of the Moose Lodge 1349.
  Funeral arrangements were handled by Marks Mortuary in Wood River.
