Mrs. Matilda M. Brown 89, of Port Royal,SC, died Sunday, January 13, 2013 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 12 Noon Friday, January 18, 2013 at the Old Fort Baptist Church, Port Royal. Burial will follow in the Old Fort Cemetery, Port Royal.

Wake Services: 7 to 8 PM Thursday in the sanctuary of the Old Fort Baptist Church.

Matilda Mabel Brown, was born May 30, 1923 in Port Royal, South Carolina, the daughter of the late William Hamilton and Minnie Brown Smith. She departed this life on Sunday, January 13, 2013, at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, James Brown, and a sister, Geneva Albright.

After attending the public schools of Beaufort County, Matilda was employed for more than 26 years, as a civil service worker, at the US Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC. During her employment on Parris Island, she received the Award of Service in appreciation of her 20 years of faithful service to the Federal Government. In addition, Matilda was given a Certificate of Appreciation on March 29, 1985, after 26 years and 9 months of employment in grateful recognition of service faithfully performed for the United States Government.

Matilda accepted Christ as her personal savior under the pastorate of late Rev. James W. Davis. As a member of the Old Fort Baptist Church, she sang in the senior choir and became the Mother of the church in which she served faithfully. Matilda was a past member of the Order of Eastern Star, (Martha Chapter #20) and had been the last known living member of the chapter.

She was a loving, kind and generous person, a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend, who will truly be missed.
