Jim Martens, 79, of Winona died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, at Sauer Memorial Home, Winona. DeLoy James "Jim" was born March 2, 1932, in Mountain Lake, MN, to Frank and Agnes (Toews) Martens. He graduated from Mountain Lake High School, Mountain Lake, in 1950, obtained his bachelor's of science degree from Mankato State University, Mankato, MN, in 1954 and his master's degree in 1965 from Mankato State University.

Jim served his country in the U.S. Army as a Medic in the Medical Corp from 1958 to 1959.

He married Kathleen E. Dick at First Mennonite Church, Mountain Lake, MN, in 1963. He taught various subjects in Gaylord, MN, for three years and then taught social studies for 34 years in Winona School District at the junior high school, retiring in 1993. He also enjoyed teaching behind-the-wheel driver training for almost 40 years.

He loved spending time with his family and getting together for birthday celebrations. He enjoyed gardening, yard work, watching sports, reading and crossword puzzles. He always looked forward to having a conversation with a friend or relative in Low German, the language that he learned as a young child.

He was a member of Pleasant Valley Church, Winona, where he was active on the Elder Board, sang in the choir and taught Bible study. Most importantly, he was a member of the body of Christ. He is in heaven today because he was justified by faith, and has peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1 KJV). Even when his health was failing, he would tell others of his Savior by sharing the verse, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved" (Acts 16:31 KJV).

Jim is survived by his wife, Kathy; four children, Randy Martens, St. Paul; Mike (Marcia) Martens, Eagan, MN.; Paul (Dina) Martens, Burnsville, MN.; and Diane (Mark) Ristau, Medford, MN.; nine grandchildren; a brother, Rick (Mary) Martens, Madison, SD; and other relatives.
