Two brothers, J Verne Bannon, Kettle Falls, and Wayne M Bannon, Nampa, ID, and two sisters, Mrs. Joey Summers, Vancouver, and Edythe McVay, Newberg, OR, also survive, as do numerous nieces and nephews. He was also a past daddy adviser for the Rainbow girls, past Boy Scout troopmaster, past district deputy for Masons, secretary of Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and secretary-treasurer of the Bi-County Interscholastic Youth Association. Bannon, who came to Davenport in 1967, had just Friday received a certificate of appreciation from the superintendent of public instruction, Dr Frank Brouillet. The state administrator had cited Bannon for 35 years of service to youth. When he first announced plans to retire this year, ‘Big Wally,' as the principal was known by more than a few fellow teachers, paused to reminisce on his career. With the help of a football scholarship, he worked himself through EWSC and then started teaching in Wilbur, where in 1941 he married Jean Miller. He later taught in Odessa, Harrington, Reardan, Kettle Falls and Riverside." (Davenport Times: 9-12-1974)
