Gene “Yogi” Long, 86, of Decatur, passed away Monday, August 15, 2011 at home. A graveside service will be held August 19, 2011 at Graceland Cemetery. Interment with Military Honors and “Flight Home” ceremony will be in Graceland Cemetery.
Gene was born July 11, 1925 in Plainview, Texas, the son of Bernie and Roberta Long. He served in the US Navy during WWII aboard the U.S.S Sangamon. Gene worked as an Iron Worker for over 50 years and worked for Christy Foltz in Decatur for over 30 years. He was a life long member of V.F.W post 99 and Iron Workers Local 46.
He married Shirley Carter in November of 1993 in New Mexico.
Gene is survived by his wife, four step-children; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers.
