Captain Burgess Dead:
Word from Mankato announces the death of Captain .W. Burgess on Thursday morning, death resulting from a tumor of the kidneys. Mr Burgess has been in poor health for some time and those best posted have been aware of his critical illness.
Samuel W Burgess was a native of Vermont born in Grafton, that state, 76 years ago. At the age of ten years he came west to Wisconsin and in 1856 became a resident of this sate, locating in Winona county, near St Charles. With the opening of the Civil War he enlisted in Co K of the famous First Minnesota, being one of the few left to tell the story of that eventful battle at Gettysburg, in which the First Minnesota saved the day for the Union forces. After two years service he was discharged for disability but as soon as he regained his strength he re-enlisted, this time in the Second Minnesota cavalry, being mustered out at the close of the war as first sergeant. He then located on a claim in Jackson county, residing there for several years. In 1870 he was united in marriage to Miss Eleanor L Wilde, daughter of the Hon Wm. Wilde, secretary of the Mapleton colony. He is survived by his wife and two children. He was also a brother-in-law of J.H. Cornell of this place and well-known in this locality.
