Clifton John Riley was the first of four children born to Roy & Sarah (Malsbury) Riley. He graduated from Marlette High School, and was the Class President in 1922. He married Gertrude Emily Johnson on August 6, 1924, in Brown City, Michigan. They had 2 sons, Richard and Paul. Clifton and Gertrude took over management of the Riley's Dairy Bar and Creamery from his parents, and together they worked there for many years until moving to Standish where they owned the Dairy Delight.
