The funeral of Rev. Martin Luther Beard, pastor of the Lutheran Church at Thurmont and one of the most widely known ministers in the county, who died very suddenly in Thurmont last evening, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the Lutheran church. The pallbearers will be the eight members of the Church Council.

The body will be placed on the 3:15 trolley and taken by way of Frederick to Middletown, where interment will be made. The services will be in charge of Rev. Charles Reinewald, pastor of the Emmitsburg Lutheran church. Wilhide and Creager are the funeral directors.

Rev. Mr. Beard was making a pastoral visit at Thurmont where he has been pastor of St. John's Lutheran church for the past nine years and became suddenly ill last evening. He went to the office of Dr. E. C. Kefauver, his physician, but not finding the doctor at home went to Cassell's drug store. He became extremely ill and lay down on the porch. He died in five minutes time.

Rev. Beard was born on a farm near Williamsport, Washington county, on April 26, 1849. While a boy he worked on the farm and at the age of twenty-one entered the Gettysburg College, from which institution he graduated in 1875. Having decided to enter the ministry, he then took the course in the Theological Seminary at Gettysburg in 1878.

At this time he took charge of the Mount Joy Lutheran congregation and served the Keys and Rocky Ridge churches. In 1881 he accepted a call to the Burkittsville Lutheran church and served this charge until 1885. He then went to Boonsboro and in 1893 assumed the Lutheran pastorate at Middletown. Rev. Beard served the Middletown charge until 1907, when he accepted a call to St. John's Lutheran church at Thurmont.

A Synod Delegate

Rev. Beard was president of the Middle and Western conferences of the Maryland Synod for a time and was three times a delegate to the General Synod. He was a member of the board of directors of the Gettysburg Theological Seminary from 1904 to 1908. He was also a member of the Ministerial Board of Education of the Maryland Synod.

Rev. Beard's wife died in 1910 and one of his daughters was killed by a Western Maryland train at Thurmont in 1913. The following children survive: Miss Sadie Beard and John beard at home; Mrs. Lester S. Birely of Thurmont; Mrs. F. Russell Young of Mt. Airy; Mrs. E. Carl Mumford, of Union, Pa., and Paul Beard of Baltimore.
