Austin Bennett died while serving for the Union in the Civil War. He was a Private in the FIRST VERMONT REGIMENT HEAVY ARTILLERY (ELEVENTH INFANTRY), CO. I. Records say he died of some form of laryngitis. Possibly complications I'm guessing. The record also says he died at "Fort Mass near Wash DC," which I gather was Fort Stevens near Washington, D.C.

Austin is the son of Lemeul Smith Bennett and Sarah West.
