Darold R. Helmberger died peacefully June 27 at the Fort Meade Veterans Administration Hospital in Sturgis. Family services will be held at Kline Frost Funeral Home in Belle Fourche Sunday evening July 1 at 7 p.m. Public services will be conducted by Pastor Steve Olson at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 2 at the United Methodist Church in Belle Fourche. Internment will be in Pine Slope Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 30 and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 1.

He was born in Gary on April 3, 1921, the oldest of three children born to Frank and Maude (Stroup) Helmberger. He married Eleanor Thompson in Danby, Minn on Dec. 2, 1941 and together they had nine children, 25 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He served in the European Theater of Operation from 1942 through 1945, as a member of the 87th Cavalry Reconnaissance and was awarded the Purple Heart.

Darold and his wife moved to Belle Fourche from Minnesota in 1974. He was an avid outdoorsman and enthusiastic hunter, trapper and fisherman until his extensive health problems prevented him from participating in these activities.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Eleanor; three daughters; one son, Robert (Ruby) Helmberger of Belle Fourche, three sons-in-law.

He was preceded in death by five children, Darlene Jordahl, Linda Kasparek, Katherine Moe and Mary and James Allen, who died in infancy. He was also preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Harold Helmberger and Deloris Mueller.
