OLEAN - Nina M. Harris Welch passed away Saturday (May 19, 2012) at The Pines Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center following a brief illness.
Born March 3, 1918, in Detroit, she was a daughter of the late Lemuel and Bertie Bosworth Butts. On April 8, 1940, she married Elias Harris, who passed away April 17, 1967. She later married Joseph T. Welch on June 17, 1978; he passed away Dec. 28, 2002.
She was a graduate of Cuba High School and the former West Brook Academy. Nina worked at Montgomery Wards for many years, and she previously owned and operated Harris grocery store with her husband.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, a volunteer at the Olean General Hospital and Olean Public Library, and an avid bridge player in various bridge clubs.
Surviving are three daughters, Susan Taylor (Bobby) Sharp of Scottsdale, Ariz., Anne (Lloyd) Bennett of Olean and Catherine (Joseph) Sabol of Allegany; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husbands, she was predeceased by sisters, Helen Bagent and Mary Lawton; brothers, Wilbur "Bill" Butts, F. Robert "Bob" Butts and L. James Butts; and a son-in-law, David A. Taylor Sr.
Family will receive friends Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Guenther Funeral Home Inc., 1303 E. State St., Olean. A funeral liturgy will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday (May 23, 2012) in the St. Joseph's Church, 1102 Walnut St., Olean. Father Anthony Salim will officiate. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
Memorials may be made to St. Joseph's Church or the Olean Public Library.
