Physician. 1st Baronet, FRS, he was an eminent Scottish physician best known for his use of Amyl Nitrate in the treatment of Angina Pectoris. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, with additional work in Austria, the Netherlands, and Germany before returning to University College London, eventually taking a position at St. Bartholomew's Hospital. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1874, Knighted in 1900, and made a Baronet in 1908.
