First-born son of the the Reverend Reuben Washington Landrum and Margaret (Brashear) Landrum. Before the war he married a Miss Miller; they had one son, William Marcus Landrum.

During the Civil War, Reuben Samuel served the CSA along with five brothers; he was in Co. 1 of the 5th Ky. Infantry and Co. G of Caudill's 10th Ky. Mounted Rifles (13th Ky. Cavalry). He was captured in action at Gladesville in 1863, along with his brother, William Silas; R.S. was held in various northern prisons.

After the war he married Maletha Jane Hagins and became a school teacher in Breathitt County. R.S. and Maletha Jane had six children: Joseph Linville, Edward Pryce, William Benton, Samuel Tilden, Albert Sidney, and James Sanford. Maletha Jane collected a Confederate Widow's Pension, #1772. Reuben Samuel is buried in the Hagins Cemetery, located on Route 30, near Noctor, in Breathitt County.
