Louise Dorothea Janike was born into a large family with strict parents who had emigrated from the Pomeran area of Germany. Her brothers and sisters were Robert, William, Herman, Emma, Eda, Martha, Marie, Anna. They worked hard on the farm as a family. Louise married Henry William Engel in 1909 and gave birth to Wilfred Henry, Ervin Ernest, Lola and Lavonna in the next few years. She was a loving and industrious mother and grandmother. She cooked hardy and tasty meals in the German fashion, lots of meat, lots of fat and because of the hard work involved in their lives, no one became fat. She loved everyone in the family and rocked her children and grandchildren while she sang "Bye, Bye Blackbird" as a lullaby. Always fun and laughter in spite of being economically challenged. Her only fault was she ruled by fear and threatened her children and grandchildren with the police, the "big black dog", and the boogeyman. She was very loved by her grandchildren in spite of the threats.
