At his residence three and one half miles northeast of Momence, on Sataurday,
Dec. 4, 1880, William J. Stratton, aged 65 years, 4 months and 3 days died.
Mr. Stratton was born in the state of Kentucky, but came to the neighborhood of
Fort Harrison with his father's family, when about six years old.
He was married to Margaret Patrick, in Edgar county, Ill., on the 17th day of
Dec. 1838.
On May 10, 1844, he with his family moved to this county (when Will county) and
settled in the town of Yellowhead, in which town he lived up to the time of his
death, his business being farming and cattle raising.
Mr. Stratton was in failing health for a year or two before his death, but he
kept up and around and conducted his business affairs as he had always done. But
a short time before his death he was attacked with bilious pneumonia, and in
spite of the best medical attendance and care, after an illness of only a few
days, he died.
He leaves surviving him his widow and five children, namely: Mrs. Ellen
Worcester, Mrs. Mary Stratton Hewett, Mrs. Delia Wickstrom, Mrs. Lotta Critchett
and Thomas H. Stratton.
Mr Stratton, ever since his settlement in this county, (and he was one of the
"old settlers"), has been a prominent citizen and business man among us, and he
secured in an eminent degree the respect and esteem of all who knew him, by
practicing both in his business dealings and in his domestic life the strictest
principles of integrity and honor.
His funeral was held in the Methodist church at Grant Park, on Monday last, the
Rev. Wm. Clark officiating, assisted by several other clergymen.
The remains were buried in the cemetery at Union Corners.
