Virginia Walker Couse was the daughter of Bolivar and Catherine Walker. Her parents were early pioneers on the Oregon Trail. In 1840 they moved from Missouri to Oregon, then across the Columbia to Roosevelt, Washington and started a large cattle ranch, later raising sheep.

Virginia was an artist and married Eanger Irving Couse in Paris in 1889.
