The son of John C. & Elizabeth (String) Kendig, in 1850 he lived with his family in Martic Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1860, he was a laborer by trade but is not found in that census. He stood 5' 6" tall and had black hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster August 22, 1864 (unnecessarily overstating his age by two years) as a private with Co. F, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd PIa). What makes his enlistment curious is that a document in his compiled military service records suggests the army had rejected him due to loss of sight in the left eye and back problems. Somehow he got in and honorably discharged by general order May 29, 1865.

He married Margaret A. C. Miller and fathered Anna Dora (b. 07/16/71 - married Benjamin Franklin Eisenberger and Henry L. Hess). His death certificate claims an 1843 year of birth.
