My mother was born in the small town of McBee, South Carolina to Thomas Andrew Horton and Mary Susan Gardner on September 9, 1911. She had one older brother, J. Howard Horton. During World War II my mother tried to join the service but couldn't so she worked with a service organization to entertain the troops. She met my father at Camp Butner, North Carolina when he was sent there before being shipped back for the invasion at Normandy. She married, Earl B. Brown while he was on leave from the Army during WWII. When he returned from the war they came back to Baton Rouge, LA to live, later moving to Baker, LA. They had four children, Ann, Susan, Elaine and Bruce.
My mother was an accomplished pianist, she loved to play her baby grand piano. We loved to gather around the piano to listen to her play. She also was a dedicated school teacher and taught up until the time of her death. She made all of our holidays wonderful, filled with family and fun. She was the glue that held us all together. We all still miss her. She loved the hills of her home in South Carolina and never quite adjusted to the flat land of Louisiana. She died of cancer Oct. 31, 1974.
