William was the son of Allen T. Stockdale and Margie Foshier Stockdale. After the untimely death of his father, he and his mother first moved to Minneapolis, MN. and then on to Topeka, KS. After completing high school William attended Dartmouth. He left Dartmouth to serve in the armed forces during WWII and became a Second Lieut. During his time of service he received a Silver Star and a Purple Heart. He married Anne Feezer on July 13, 1942 in Tuscon, AZ., while attending college and they had one child during his time in service. Anne was the daughter of Lester Weck Feezer and Charlotte Garwood Ashbrook.
After William left the service he went back to Darmouth to finished his BA. He later attended KU to work on his PhD. and eventually was offered a job at the Univ. of Minn. where he taught until his retirement. He then moved on to AZ. where he lived until his death.
William and Anne had two daughters Charlotte and Marjorie Stockdale.
