On 13 January 1871 he took a second wife, Lucy Ann Holt, a widow. She was the daughter of Samuel Holt and Charlotte (nee Davis) Holt of Munsonville.

In March of 1873 the population of the town elected him Selectman and then, in 1875, Nelson Town Clerk.

"Samuel W. Loveland, the oldest citizen of the town, being a nonagenarian, with six years to spare, on the afternoon of the 6th inst., bade adieu to the things of this earth and entered the, 'undiscovered country, from whose bourne no traveller (traveler) returns'.

He was born in Stoddard Dec. 12th, 1794, if we are correctly informed, and in his earlier years was a school teacher in Vermont.

Samuel served five years in the 12th US Infantry during the War if 1812, and was in the battles of Chippewa and Bridgewater. He was wounded at Lundy's Lane.

He served as Nelson Town Clerk for four years. And, since 1828 he has been the recipient of a pension of six dollars a month. In the prime of life he was one of the popular auctioneers in this section, and followed the vocation for many years.

During his latter years he was a most inveterate fisherman, with a keen relish for the sport.

Mr. Loveland was familiarly known as 'Uncle Sam'."
