John Leighty was the son of John Leighty and Catherine WELKER Leighty. John was born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, USA on 17 Nov 1809 and died in DeKalb County, Indiana, USA on 18 Aug 1900.
In 1824 John was an apprentice shoemaker probably to the Kiehl family in Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. In 1827-1833 he was a journeyman shoemaker. He moved to Concord Township, DeKalb,Indiana, USA in June 1844 where he went into the mercantile business with his son in 1865.
John Leighty married Elizabeth SOWASH 1813-1889 at the First Lutheran Church in Greensburg, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania on the 4th of April 1833.
They were the parents of 9 Children:
1 - Catharine Leighty 1834-1893
2 - Alexander Leighty abt 1836
3 - Maria Leighty born 1837-1912
4 - Jacob Leighty born 1840-1912
5 - William "Bill" M. Leighty 1841-1915
6 - John Leighty born 1844-bef 1885
7 - Susan Leighty 1847-1879
8 - Mary E. Leighty 1849-1920
9 - Charles B. Leighty born 1853-1922
