Roland was born St. Louis, Missouri to William and Anna Stanley (nee Kirsch). He was a graduate of Park's Air College (class of 1936), employee of American Airlines for 43 years, pilot, mechanic, aeronautical engineer, and is listed at the Smithsonian Museum as a Pioneer in Aviation. He was also recipient of the Order of the Arrow and Silver Beaver awards from the Boy Scouts of America, Indian Nations Council.
