He was the son of Robert and Catherine Houghton Chambers.

He attended the common schools of the city of Trenton taking academic courses. After, he was associated with his father with the management of his extensive estate, of which he came into possession of much of it, after his fathers death.

He was a director in the Trenton Bank, and contributed largely to the development of Chambersburg, having erected many stores and residences there before its annexation to Trenton.

He was a republican and member of the First Presbyterian Church of Trenton.

He married Margaret A. Waydell.
