Jeanne Campbell
June 27, 1935 – April 7, 2011

Jeanne Campbell passed away suddenly on April 7, 2011. She was born Jeanne Carol Sutton, in her grandfather’s storm cellar during a tornado watch on June 27, 1935. Her father, Granville Louis Sutton, passed away on November 21, 1935, when Jeanne was just five months old. Two years later, on August 27, 1937, her mother, Ruth Helen Johnson married Walter Mercer, who loved her very much.

The family moved around a great deal during the 1940s following Walter Mercer’s occupation in the pipe trades. Jeanne started school in a one-room schoolhouse in Davis, West Virginia. In the 1940s they lived primarily in Oklahoma, Youngstown, Ohio, and Ingleside, Texas, then settled in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1951. She attended Ingleside High School from 1948 to 1951, and graduated from Arsenal Technical High School, Indianapolis in 1953. In 2003, she returned to Ingleside to attend the 50th Class Reunion and reunite with her Ingleside classmates.

Jeanne married Robert Martin Campbell, Jr. on June 24, 1957 and settled in Oxnard, California. She worked at the U. S. Naval Air Station, Point Mugu, where she advanced from secretary in the supply department to assistant in the Engineering Division, Aero Space Department. She resigned her position in 1963 to care for their children, Robert Michael Campbell and Richard Martin Campbell, She and Bob were proud of her position as homemaker. Jeanne loved doing crafts and in the early 1980s opened Seven Sees Stitchery, a needlepoint shop in Oxnard. When they retired in 1985, Jeanne and Bob sold their home, bought an RV, and traveled to many beautiful places in California and the Southwest. They were frequently asked to stay and work at the camps, which they enjoyed doing. In 1997, they settled at El Monte Arabian Horse Ranch in Lakeside, California where Jeanne loved helping care for their finches.

In October 2000, Jeanne and Bob settled permanently in Santee, California. In 2001, Jeanne traveled with her father, Walter Mercer (then 98 years old), to Oklahoma and Texas doing research for her Sutton, Johnson, and Mercer genealogy and family history. After Bob passed away in 2006, Jeanne’s health declined and her son, Robert, became her companion and caretaker.

Jeanne was preceded in death by her fathers, Granville Sutton and Walter Mercer, her mother Ruth Mercer, sisters Patricia Lee Mercer, Elizabeth Ogle Fothergill, her husband Robert M. Campbell, Jr., and a grandson. She is survived by sons, Robert Michael Campbell, Richard Martin Campbell, two grandchildren Robert and Tanna Marie, a sister Trudy Mercer, and many dear friends. A memorial service will be held at 10 am on July 8, 2011 in the Chapel at the El Cajon-Lakeside-Santee Funeral Home [http://elcajonmortuary.com] at 684 S. Mollison Ave, El Cajon, CA 92020. Her remains will be inurned with those of her husband at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego. An online memorial is available at Legacy.com.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Jeanne to your local food bank or charity of your choice.
