Andrew was born in Jefferson County, Indiana in 1828, then moved to Croton, Iowa in 1851, where he married Jane McMillan. They had a son who they named James Andrew. In 1854, he went to Shasta County, California to seek his fortune, leaving his wife and son behind. A.J. was a placer miner and skilled mechanic and this was the height of the gold rush. Jane and James died in 1857 and 1858 respectively.
A.J. married Sarah DeHaven in Red Bluff in 1861 and they went to Silver City, Idaho in 1866. Andrew was a wheelwright and had a blacksmith shop. Many of the quartz wagons and sleighs used in the mines were made by hand in his shop.
