Kevin Burnette Murray

May 11, 1956 ~ August 2, 2012

Kevin Burnette Murray died at the age of 56, in the course of his job as pilot for the company, Air Excursions, on August 2, 2012. Kevin had been flying for Air Excursions since May 2012, carrying visitors and cargo in Southeast Alaska. On August 2, 2012, en route from Gustavus to Juneau and carrying cargo, Kevin's plane went down at Point Howard and he was killed in the crash.

Kevin was born on May 11, 1956, in Seattle, WA to parents, Burnette and Marie Murray. Kevin, along with his brother and sisters, grew up on Mercer Island. Kevin's Uncle Ray was a pilot and would often take Kevin with him to the airport, where he let him sit in the Captain's seat. This may well have been the beginning of Kevin's life-long passion for flying. Kevin attended Bellevue College and received his AA Degree in 1977. In 1987, he became a police officer at Brewster Police Department until 1989, when he became Deputy Sheriff at the Okanogan County Sheriff's Office. Although he was a valuable member of the Sheriff's Office, his life-long dream was to fly, and in 2003, he left the police force, eventually flying as pilot for 40-Mile Air in Tok, AK. From that point on, Kevin worked hard to earn flight hours, receiving Colgan Air SF340 training in 2007, and GoJet Airlines CRJ700 training in 2008. Even when he wasn't flying, Kevin enjoyed being and working around planes as Customer and Ground Service Agent for Horizon Air in Seattle and Wenatchee, WA. Among his family, Kevin was known and admired for his dedication to his dreams of being an airline pilot. In 1999, he married Melody Miller, becoming a father to her three children, Tyler (28) and the twins, Maddie and Ryan (23). Kevin was a loving husband, dedicated father and devoted family man. He also became a brother and an uncle to Melody's numerous brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. Kevin really enjoyed his new family, making sure to attend the various family functions during the holidays, and hosted many summertime gatherings at their home in Chelan. His easy-going nature made him a favorite, especially with his great-nieces and nephews. His great-nephew, Kessler, age 7, especially enjoyed his first airplane ride with Uncle Kevin in his plane.

Kevin is survived by his wife, Melody Murray; his children, Tyler and fiance, Stefani, Maddie and Ryan Miller; his daughter, Meradythe Edson, from a previous marriage; his sister, Mary Regan; brother, Barth Murray and his wife, Joyce; sister, Carol Kirgan and her husband, Brad; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Burnette and Marie Murray; and his brother-in-law, Mike Regan.

Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 10, 2012 at the Lake Chelan United Methodist Church. The service is being officiated by Pastor Lilia Felicitas-Malana. Precht Rose Chapel will be handling the funeral arrangements.

Because I fly

Because I fly

I laugh more than other men

I look up and see more than they,

I know how the clouds feel,

What it's like to have the blue in my lap,

to look down on birds,

to feel freedom in a thing called the stick...

who but I can slice between God's billowed legs,

and feel then laugh and crash with His step

Who else has seen the unclimbed peaks?

The rainbow's secret?

The real reason birds sing?

Because I Fly,

I envy no man on earth.
