Also surviving are a son and a daughter, four grandchildren, five great-grandsons, one great granddaughter. Three brothers, Robert, Ted & Francis, and two sisters, Madeline Harper & Isabel Wayne, preceded him in death.
A member of St. Aloysius Church in Bowling Green, his first church membership was at St. Patrick's in Decatur. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific. A graduate of Millikin University in Decatur, he held a master's degree from Indiana State University and a Ph.D. from the Ohio State University. He worked for the U.S. Bureau of Prisons at correctional institutions in Kansas, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio and Kentucky, and subsequently held associate superintendency and wardenship positions in the Minnesota Corrections Systems. He became an associate professor at Illinois State University, establishing and teaching in its undergraduate Social Work program. After retirement from ISU, he practiced school social work with the LaSalle County, Illinois special Education District.
