After graduation he attended law school at the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 1941. Following graduation William enlisted in the U.S. military, serving as a captain in the Army Air Corps, in the South Pacific during World War II. Judge Duffy loved the city of Green Bay and was an active member of the community, serving on numerous advisory boards, and was a supporter of the city's many civic endeavors.
