PRICE-Retired United Mine Worker of America District # 22 President, Fred A. Lupo, passed away February 22, 2013 while exploring in the great-outdoors.
Fred was a lifelong resident of Carbon County who was born April 4, 1949 in Standardville, Utah. He was the son of Louie and Leola Richins Lupo.
Fred was a graduate of Carbon High School Class of 1967 where he participated in football, Helper Allstar baseball team and Boys State. After graduation from high school, he enlisted in the US Air Force where he was stationed in Orlando, Florida for 4 years. During his spare time, Fred and a group of buddies would race their cars on the quarter mile strip. His car of choice back then, was a "Little Chevy II", which was the love of his life. He loved this car so much that when he returned from the service, so did the car.
After returning from the service, he was married to Carol Denison from January 29, 1972-2003. Together they raised their family in Price where they were blessed with Fred Jr. and Stacie, and a wonderful granddaughter Nikki.
His love for the outdoors started with his parents and younger brother Gary. Together the family spent many hours, days and years on the Fremont River. Fred's love for hunting began with his brother, and when Fred Jr. came of age they started their annual "Lupo Hunting Trips" on Fish Creek Ridge. These days were intended for hunting, but eventually the trips became a time for Fred to make new memories, which in-turn lead to more stories. Everyone knew Fred loved a good story and when the four-wheelers came along, this opened up a new opportunity for him to explore year round adventures with family and friends. Whoever went with Fred on these excursions, knew that they had their own personal tour guide who knew every rock, nook, cranny and of course every mud hole on the mountain.
Fred's working career began by delivering products to Well's for John Howa and later working for Olympia Beer. His mining career stared at Braztah # 3 Mine working underground as a roof bolter/material man while working side by side with Mike Dalpiaz. His fellow workers elected him as "The Committee Man" and Union President for Local # 8303 from 1975-1982. He was later elected by the membership of District # 22 as District Vice-President, eventually serving as District President from 1996-2005. Over the years, Fred made many lifelong friends at the District Office where he had the opportunity to do what he loved most, which was helping others. He spent many hours traveling, negotiating and arbitrating with his office wife, Mike Dalpiaz for over 30 years. This really wasn't a job for Fred, it was a labor of love that he always cherished.
He is survived by his son, Fred Lupo, Jr., Grantsville, Utah; daughter, Stacie Lupo (Melissa Harding-Lupo), Portland, Oregon; granddaughter, Nikki Lupo; beloved brother, Gary and Cheryl Lupo of Spring Glen; many cousins, ATV and coffee buddies that will dearly miss him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and many loving aunts and uncles whom he loved dearly.
