COCOA, Fla. -- Helen Irene Lombard of Cocoa, Florida, formerly of North Baltimore, Ohio, and Greenfield, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at the age of 86 at the home of her daughter in West Des Moines, Iowa. A kind and gentle spirit, Helen was born to Willis and Leila Elam in Greenfield, Iowa on November 24, 1924. On her wedding day to Bernard W. Lombard on May 18, 1946, the newlyweds traveled to North Baltimore, Ohio to begin their life together. This marriage concluded after 37 years, following the death of Bernard in 1983.
Helen was active in the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and was a Meals on Wheels volunteer after she learned to drive in her 60's. In 1988 Helen moved to Florida, where for the last few years she volunteered at the Martin Anderson Senior Center and in the Asbury Arms apartment complex where she lived.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bernard, brother Don Elam, and grandson John Englehart, Jr. Helen is survived by her son, Bernard E. (Debra) Lombard of Cocoa, FL; daughter, Peggy (John) Englehart of West Des Moines, IA; grandsons, Travis (Alexis) Lombard of Orlando, FL; Craig Lombard of Cocoa, FL; great-grandson, John James Englehart of Morning Sun, IA; sister, Ruth Moore of Greenfield, IA; and nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 1, 2011 at St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church, North Baltimore, with Reverend Ralph Mineo officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, North Baltimore, Ohio next to her beloved husband.
Visitation will be held 1 hour (1:00-2:00 p.m.) prior to the service Saturday.
Arrangements are entrusted to SMITH-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, North Baltimore.
