Despite the birth date on his death certificate, Lewis was born in the 1860's. For the 1870 census, his age suggests an 1863 birth; and for the 1900 census, his date of birth was listed as March 1865. This later birth date is significant because Lewis wasn't found in the 1860 census with Joseph & Elizabeth Adkins, but he should have been if he'd been born in 1857. Also, the Joseph listed is not the same one Elizabeth married. Her Joseph died April 8, 1863, which would exclude him from being Lewis' father. A pension was filed by Riley Adkins for Joseph. My DNA testing revealed a connection to John McCown's line, suggesting he was the father of Lewis.
