J.B. was born and raised in Lonoke where he graduated from high school, the son of Sam J. Gately and Lillie Mae Gately, who both preceded him in death along with a brother, Sidney W. Gately of Earle, Arkansas.
J.B. was a Little Rock Police Officer for thirteen years, worked for Alcoa at Bauxite in the plant security and fire department until his retirement in 2004, a member of Geyer Springs First Baptist Church in Little Rock, a US Army Veteran, a member of Aluminia Masonic Lodge of Bryant and Congo Masonic Lodge of Benton, and a 32nd Degree Mason.
He is survived by a son, Sammy Gately (Melody) of Benton and two daughters, Lana Gately Caddy (John) of Bryant and Cinda Gately Ehren of Conway, a sister, Winona Connor (John) of Friendswood, Texas, and ten grandchildren.
