OBITUARY:
Death of This Distinguished Figure In Tennessee for So Many Years, of Heart Disease
Nashville, Dec. 12 -- Col. John Overton, who was taken ill of heart disease at his home, near this city, Friday afternoon, died this morning at 10 o'clock.
Col. Overton was out in the cold Friday, and it is presumed this had much to do with the attack. Deceased died in the house in which he was born and had lived for seventy-eight years.
The news of the death caused great sorrow in the city, where he had been a well-known figure so long. Col. Overton was a man of much wealth, but the civil war cost him a great deal, for he espoused the cause of the confederacy with great zeal and spend lots of money in its behalf. He served his people once as justice of the peace and was also at one time a member of the general assembly. He was the only son of Judge John Overton, who came to Nashville in 1787, and was Andrew Jackson's close friend.
Col. Overton was married twice. His first wife was Miss Rachel Harding. She was the mother of John Overton, Jr., of Memphis. His second wife, who survives him, was Miss Mary maxwell. The children of this marriage are Madames J. M. Dickinson, John Thompson and Hugh Lawson Craighead and Messrs. Jesse Maxwell Overton and Robert Overton. Judge John M. Lea married his sister.
The funeral will take place next Wednesday morning at the residence, and the internment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
