Ref: 9 Jan. 1969, Mediapolis New Era, Mediapolis, IA -- Dr. Charles D. Hutchcroft, secretary-treasurer of the Iowa Crop Improvement Association, was named Honorary Member of the Iowa Seed Dealers Association by outgoing president, Larry Petersen, Petersen Seed Co., Waterloo.

Each year the outgoing president selects someone whom he feels has contributed a great deal to the seed industry to receive the award, a beautiful plaque.

Dr. Hutchcroft is a native Iowan born and reared in Des Moines County. He is the son of Lucille Hutchcroft of Mediapolis. He received his BS, MS and PhD degrees from Iowa State University, Ames, IA.

From 1946 to 1959 he was assistant secretary of the association. In Feb. of 1959 he was appointed secretary treasurer of the Iowa Crop Improvement Association to succeed Joe L. Robinson who retired after 39 years of service.

Hutchcroft has proposed and initiated a number of changes n the seed certification program that has enabled the program to expand.

Among the changes are: the introduction of the limited generation system, the use of the two tag system of labeling certified seed, the adoption of an approved processor system and pretagging of certified seed by approved processors.

Hutchcroft has been a leader in the International Crop Improvement Association, now the Association of Official Seed Certifying Agencies.

Hutchcroft is seed production manager for the committee for Agricultural Development and was instrumental in getting a distribution system for the release of new varieties based on experience and participation in the seed certification program.

He is a member of the American Society of Agronomy, Sigma XI and Gamma Sigma Delta.

The Hutchcrofts have three children: Charlene, a freshman at Iowa State University; Dennett, sophomore at Ames High School; and Paul, a sixth grader.

Hutchcroft has served beyond the call of duty to improve Iowa Agriculture through improved seed quality and distribution. His efforts to work with the seed industry led to his being chosen to receive this award. (picture)
