The Bishop family is said to have its roots in Holland. As tradition has it Thomas and Claborn were sons of Dutch immigrants. According to Hugh Joel Bishop Sr ., Thomas and Claborn's father may have been a Jim (James) Bishop . Thomas Bishop was born in South Carolina in 1800. Thomas had settled in Pike County Georgia by 1827, near the Pike/Upson County line in the community called Jugtown.

Jugtown was and is a small community located near the Pike/Upson County line in west central Georgia. It lies immediately south of the Pine Mountain chain, near its eastern extremity. The nearest town is Meansville, approximately 5 miles to the north. Thomaston is some 8 miles to the south. Several major pottery families are well known to the area, they are the Bishop , Brumbelow, Stewart, Salter, Brown, and Rogers families. In the 1850 census Thomas is listed as a farmer, but he is said to have been one of the first potters in the Jugtown community. Tradition has it that the Bishops practiced their craft back in their homeland Holland. Thomas Bishop married Lidia Brumbelo Sept. 8, 1819, in Jackson County Georgia. Lidia was born in North Carolina in 1799.

Lydia's occupation was a cake baker.

She is buried in Upson Co., Georgia, with her husband Thomas Bishop in a pasture in McCorkles curve on Hwy. 19 north of Thomaston, Georgia. Gravesite is between Shiloh Baptist Church and the store in the curve. Thomas is in an unmarked grave on the left side of the road coming north on 19 from Thomaston.
