Anthony (Antonious) Osebold was a woodcarver by the age of 17. The 1870 census shows him as an Apprentice Carver at the age of 14. Once known as "A Builder of Altars" he designed, built and carved the main altar, the Sacred Heart Altar and the Blessed Virgin Altar at St. Bonaventure Chapel in Detroit. He studied in Germany and several art centers in Europe. He built over 3000 altars and furnishings for churches in Michigan, New York, Nebraska and many others. In the Detroit area, his work can be enjoyed at St. Joseph, St. Leo, St. Elizabeth and St. Albertus as well as the old frame church of St. Stanislaus. He worked on pieces and modules in a work shop behind his home in Detroit Michigan then assembled them on site.
