Calvin Lombard was a minuteman from Gorham, Maine, called for defense of the town of Falmouth (Portland), Maine. He was a patriot and volunteer for Massachusetts also. When Col. Phinney's regiment was called into Falmouth to defend the town against Captain Mowatt and his threat to burn the town, Calvin and his neighbors from Gorham volunteered. He fired the first shot at Captain Mowatt's ship. When Captain Mowatt demanded Lombard's body in retaliation, the regiment refused to give him over. Mowatt retreated and the town was saved.
