Joy A. Mitchell was born January 26, 1915 in Wayne County, IL to Thurman and Lille "Belle" Osterman Mitchell. Joy A. Mitchell retired with the rank of Major U.S. Army. He received his battlefield commission on September 13, 1944 in Italy while he was a member of Company "C" 16th Armored Engineer BN, 1st Armored Division. His decorations include the Silver Star, The Soldiers Medal, The Armed Forces Reserve Medal with hour glass along with other awards. He fought in both North Africa & Italy including the battles at Kasserine Pass and Anzio. He started his US Postal service career as a rural route carrier. He was appointed as Noble Postmaster by President Harry S. Truman in 1949 and continued to serve until his retirement in 1981. His length of service is the longest term in the history of the Noble Post Office since its inception in 1854. He was a lifelong member of the Forest Ridge Church and an avid outdoorsman whose primary passion was quail hunting.
